Australian Bulldog

The Australian Bulldog breeding program was begun to try to create a unique, functional dog immediately recognizable as a bulldog with excellent people friendly temperament without the well known health problems of the present day British Bulldog. It should be noted that these dogs are not American Bulldog, British Bulldog crosses. Simply put, by judicious cross breeding, we are trying to remove the exaggerations of the British Bulldog which lead to health problems such as breeding difficulties, breathing problems, skin problems etc. by lengthening the nose, broadening the hips, reducing chest size and amount of facial wrinkles while retaining a 'bulldog' face, an affectionate 'full on' personality, and still giving an impression of strength with good musculature. Having said that, this project is still in its infancy. So far skin problems are vastly improved, the teeth are a lot better, bitches are not needing caesareans and breathing difficulties are improved. However problems will still inevitably crop up and it is imperative that we get feed-back from our breeders and owners to make this project a long-term success.

As far as official registration is concerned; naturally this breed-in-the-making is not recognized yet by the Australian Kennel Council. Perhaps it will be one day in the future. It is one of the many things that we are working toward. We do not want the Australian Bulldog to look like the British Bulldog, beautiful though it is, we want a unique dog that stands out in its own right. It will certainly be however a close cousin to the British Bulldog. A Register is kept of all puppies whelped within this program and a photographic record is kept of the sire and dam. A breed certificate is issued. If a dog is not in our register it is not a legitimate part of this particular breeding program. They come in all sorts of colours: reds, whites, brindles, red brindles, white and fawns and all pied mixes of these colours. They are certainly interesting looking dogs and have a great laid back temperament. We have a rule that if a dog does not have an excellent people friendly temperament we do not breed from it. They are a great family pet suitable for families with older children, as they can be too strong and boisterous for very small children.
